Wheel Over Point or WOP

What is wheel Over Point ?

When the wheel is turned the ship take some time to respond and this is primarily due to the inertia of ship. Hence the wheel should be turn over at a point from which the ship is required to turn.
It is obtained by drawing a wheel over line. (Line parallel to final course )

The distance between the WOP and the ship commencing it's turn denoted by F distance and it's depend on

Length of the ship
Displacement
Trim
Type of vessel

WOP= R(1- Cos Ө ) + F Sin Ө

where F is normally 0.1 NM for smaller ships and 0.15 NM for large ships.

Wheel Over Line :-

It is a line drawn parallel to the final course. The point at which it cuts the initial course line is WOP. The distance at which wheel over line is drawn parallel to the final course.
