What are the Advantages of ECDIS over Conventional paper Chart ?
• Position
fixing at required interval can be done without the indulgence of an officer of
the watch.
• Continuous
monitoring of ship’s position with respect to its planned track and available sea
room.
• When
RADAR/ARPA is overlaid on ECDIS, target acquired by ARPA can also be similarly
monitored.
• If two
position fixing system are available, the discrepancy between the two positions
taken by two different systems can be identified.
• Charts can
be corrected and updated directly with the help of floppy/CD.
• Passage
planning can be done on ECDIS, it without referring to other publications.
• Various
alarms can be set and if any parameter is impeded the alarm will activate.
• Progress of
the passage can be monitored in a more disciplined manner, since other
navigational data are also available on ECDIS.
• Alarms can
be activated to attract the attention of the OOW in case of ship drift beyond
certain limits of the planned track.
• Anchoring
can be planned more precisely with the ARPA information being interfaced with
ECDIS.
