The purpose of the INTERCO is to provide communication in situations related essentially to safety of navigation and persons, especially when language difficulties arise.

The signals used consist of:

(a) Single letter – For Immediate Communication

(b) Two letter signals - For General Communication

(c) Three letter signals – Medical Communication
